bees

Juni 17, 2018 @ 10:00 - 18:00

Wax and honey were precious goods in the Middle Ages! Peasants had to deliver them as part of their feudal duties, but monasteries also had their own hives to ensure a permanent supply!

On this day, our bees are getting the attention they deserve… in our daily routine on the construction site they tend to be forgotten sometimes!

Together with Dr. Sonja Guber (archaeologist and beekeeper), our own beekeepers Peter Frech and Roland Häusler as well as the local club of beekeepers, we are explaining the early medieval usage and care of bees. We will show tools connected to beekeeping and products of bees, and demonstrate how an early medieval hive is made from willows. Dr.Guber speaks English, so don’t hesitate to come and ask what you always wanted to know about bees, be it in the historical context, or very recent and problems with a dramatic decline of the bee!
